She keeps saying it on her Facebook page. On her website. She claims:

Revealing Eden, Save The Pearls Part One, is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which deadly solar radiation burns the planet and kills off most fair-skinned people who cannot resist “The Heat,” because of the low levels of melanin in their skin.

But that is scientifically inaccurate. In fact that couldn’t be further from the truth in her scenario of a post-apocalyptic world. While skin cancer rates are generally lower rates among PoC communities, skin cancer rates have been steadily rising in recent years.

And it is the misconception that black PoC can not get skin cancer that makes it far more deadly. When skin cancer in black PoC, is diagnosed the cancer has been there longer and is in more advanced stages, leaving skin cancer survival rates for dark skined PoC hovering around 77%; that’s 14% below white folk’s 91% survival rate.

While studies do show that higher melanin rates found in DNA does protect to some skin from cancer, the rates have increased by ten times since the 1930s for all races. However low the cancer rate, it has when treated, a very high survival rate and this widely believed misconception Foyt has described, is not helping survival rates.

Foyt is spreading misinformation about health by claiming that white people are all going to get skin cancer and black people will not be affected. She is encouraging a deadly misconception.

She can not use “but the characters are protecting themselves from the sun” as an excuse to use blackface, as blackface is a form of make up and would not shield ones skin from levels of UV rays which are unhindered by our ozone layer. 

Either Foyt has not done her research or she knows that skin cancer can be found in all people, has a higher survival rate among white folk because of the misconception she is conveying, and that the overall survival rates of all cancers in all people is at 62% due to early detection and advancing cancer treatments and she just doesn’t care because money.
