Like I’m not here for the prosecution of drug addicts.

There are reasons people turn to drugs and it has nothing to do with how strong or weak you are or how irresponsible you are. When you’re put in a situation where you need to escape, you don’t deserve to be prosecuted for looking for that escape. When drug addicts recover, they’re told to start over new, move to a new place, etc, because when you’ve been in an environment that’s so toxic that you turned to drugs in the first place, it increases the chance of relapse to put you back there.

So shout out to all the people who constantly get shit on because they have no where else to turn but substance abuse.

I don’t like Rob Ford. At all. In the least. The man doesn’t know how to run the city. He is aggressive, he talks without thinking, he’s willfully ignorant at best dishonest at worst. He rarely shows up for council, when he does show up he usually spends it either talking to people in suits who come to watch in chamber or just sitting there and when he does talk he proves he has no idea how council works, let alone how to run a city.

He’s been to court for liable suits. He has a DUI. He’s a former drug dealer. He once assaulted another councilor. Police were once called to his house on a domestic abuse call because he got in a fight with his wife. He threatened a reporter who trespassed on his property with physical violence. He’s banned certain news papers from city council, he’s used racial slurs and he’s never apologized and he was elected on the basis of sensationalism.

I don’t like the man. I don’t like his politics. I don’t like his attitude. I don’t like the fact he’s been on council for half a decade and still doesn’t know what he’s doing. I don’t like him. Period. The only thing I hate more than Ford is that fatphobia often plays into descriptions of him and that’s not his fault, that’s the media, but none the less, I don’t like him for all the reasons listed above and some I haven’t but could probably found by searching my topoli tag.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not surprised that the man was caught on video smoking crack. The mans a former drug dealer. In exposes of him news papers like Toronto Star have used heroin addicts who were former clients of him so I wouldn’t put it passed him to deal cocaine. It’s entirely possible Ford is a recovered addict who relapsed because the stress of running a city combined with the stress of not knowing how to run a city combined with the stubborn notion that he doesn’t need to learn how to run a city which just makes everything harder, would drive any former addict to relapse.

However not surprised I am, I am annoyed. As much as I don’t think Ford, let alone Ford on crack should run a city, drug addiction is never as simple as people like to believe it is and all this hype around the video is definitely pushing that awareness further down then it already is. And I get it. Someone who has a substance abuse problem is going to make decisions based upon when they can get their next fix, not upon what’s beneficial. Someone who isn’t in the mindset to make rational decisions should not run a city. But persecuting drug addicts for being drug addicts is how we ignore problems.

No one turns to cocaine or heroin because they think hard drugs are going to be a fun time. They’re looking for an escape at first and then eventually it just becomes a matter of next fix. If Ford is trying to escape something that should be the topic of discussion.

Ford is very easy to manipulate, he is constantly at the beckon of his brother Doug because he doesn’t know what’s going on half the time and his capacity to assess the situations he has to deal with is questionable. On the outside it looks like Ford can’t deal with the stress of city council, Ford can’t deal with the reporters, Ford is in constant need of a team because he can’t fight his battles himself, then Ford needs to step down.

And if the reality is that he needs to step down the publicizing a video of him not being able to deal with the stress of his life is not going to do anything. Don’t get angry over people with addictions or history of addictions, be angry that after the video is leaked chances are Toronto will still have a mayor who can’t handle responsibility without turning to hard drugs.

The first immigrants to Europe arrived thousands of years ago from central Asia. Most pre-contact Europeans lived together in small villages.
